LIVE at The Rosebud: June 12, 13, 14, 2025

Rural America isn’t what it used to be. Before the internet, the cities defined the cutting edge of music and culture. Small towns bought records from labels in big cities and tuned in to radio stations broadcast from the populated coasts. Fast-forward through indie labels, streaming services, podcasts, and social media, and you inevitably end up where we are today: an endless and unpredictable melting pot where every individual across the country can curate their own custom cultural experience. Exposure becomes a choice, and location a preference, as anyone can get artistic recognition from anywhere.

Which leads me to why I love living here in rural Oregon. Here, surrounded by natural beauty, I have the time and resources to hone my craft to a degree I couldn’t afford in the city, and I have befriended many dedicated artists who feel the same. This weekend my band Widespread Haze played the 2nd Annual Southern Oregon Music and Arts Festival: a full day of 20 live bands, vendors, and good times run by local musician and producer Tyrell Adkins of Tarantula Trust Fund, before The Dry County Crooks played The Rosebud. I was filled with a feeling of comradery and faith in each other’s dreams. With enough of us and our beautiful communities to back us up, rural America becomes the source of cutting-edge American culture by sheer numbers, artistic perseverance, and a little help from our digital friends. We’ve made it to a new horizon of human creativity and geographical freedom- to the Rural Renaissance of the United States of America. Rural America isn’t what it used to be- now it is so much more!
