“We can be unique together!”

Authenticity is a big word in the arts. From folk singers to black-metal bands, the A-word is used to measure and describe both an imperceivable intention in performance (Spanish “vivencia”: music as a lived experience), and observable lifestyle choices in persona. The opposite of an authentic artist is known colloquially as a “poseur” – a term who’s debate has fueled the evolution of pop culture in all directions.

But what does it mean to be an authentic spectator? How can we be authentic in our appreciation of artistic authenticity? Simply by showing up, being present, arriving, and allowing; letting the music move us: emotionally, physically (dance if we want to, don’t if we don’t!), and spiritually. When I look up from the sound-booth and see a room full of people who may or may not know each other, listening, engaging, connecting, receiving the musical experience being shared with them, the meaning of the word “poseur” and all concerns associated with it melt into a truly magical and authentic experience. We can be unique together. In fact, we can’t help it!
